Online Tutoring Instructions for Students
- When you first log in to the online tutoring room, you may be prompted to install an Adobe Connect Add-In. This is not required, but it may enhance your ability to interact with the tutor.
- Online and in-person tutoring sessions may be recorded for the tutorial video library on VNet.
- In the Attendee List, tutors will have a yellow icon beside their names and students will have a blue icon
- Tutors have microphones so they can talk to you if your speakers are on.
- If you have a microphone connected to your computer, you can request permission from the tutor to allow you to use your microphone. (By default, this option is disabled.) Once the tutor gives you microphone rights, a yellow window will pop up in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Click on “Speak Now” to turn on your microphone.
- If this pop-up disappears before you can click it, then you can also turn on the microphone by clicking on the hands-free icon in the lower-left part of your screen. A green moving bar below this icon will indicate that your microphone is detecting sound
- The microphone icon beside your name indicates that you have been given microphone rights
- If you don’t have a microphone, you can communicate with the tutor via chat like you would in your favorite chat program.
- There are 2 online tutoring rooms in which tutors may be helping students online or at the Physics Learning Center on campus. If one tutor is busy, try visiting the other room. The tutor in the other room might be available.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Connection Problems
- If you are trying to access one of the online tutoring rooms while connected to the wireless network on the University of Houston campus through a UHGuest account, your screen will freeze at this “Connecting” page:

- If you are using UH’s wireless connection, you need to log in with your personal CougarNet account instead of the UHGuest account. To verify which account you’re using and to log off of the UHGuest account, visit https://vernier-cs-1.cc.e.uh.edu/logon.

Microphone and Sound Problems
- If you are having problems with the sound, go through the Audio Setup Wizard in VMeeting. Click on “Meeting”, “Manage My Settings”, and “Audio Setup Wizard”.

- For other technical issues with the physics tutorial video library or with live online tutoring, please contact VNet Support (713-743-1618; vnet@nsm.uh.edu; or SRBI, room 202).
